Birders with a variety of experience attend the festival. To better meet
your expectations, we are asking that you pre-register for the birding festival
activities that best suit your interests. Many of the activities are conducted at
the same time, so please register for only one activity per time slot.
Pre-registration for lunch is also preferred for planning purposes.

If you have a checklist of grassland bird species that are your "must see or hear" birds, this is the tour for you. For 3 1/2 hours your experienced guides will visit numerous locations that require some walking, so that you can learn to identify the calls and visual identification of those difficult grassland birds. Other sightings will not be ignored, but, the focus of this tour is for the dedicated birders who are looking for the "elusive ones". |

Mallards to Meadowlarks Guided Birding Tour

A general Refuge tour which will focus on having the widest variety of birds viewed, and sometimes heard. The tour buses will be unloaded at three or four prime locations, where participants will walk short distances to view a wide variety of grassland species. If you want variety, this 3 1/2 hour tour should fit your needs. |

us as we observe the waving seas of native grasses and flowers. This is the habitat that is unique and vital to the grassland birds. |

Bird Biology Blitz |
An indoor setting to discover biological tidbits from the large whooping crane to the small piping plover. How are the populations of these two species responding to recovery efforts? How do they use North Dakota during their life? What are their nesting habits? When you add in the life history of the local sharp-tailed grouse, you will have an afternoon of fun feathered facts.

Youth Activities |
Make YOUR home a place for the birds when you join Refuge staff in building your own wren nesting box. Become a junior detective and explore the “Mystery Boxes”, then find out how a birds body parts can also be clues about the life it leads. Activities led by Jackie Jacobson and the Fish & Wildlife Service Team. |

Amateur Wildlife Photography in ND (Photo Shows, Self- Publishing & More) |
Chester Nelson, an area native, will present his work and discuss wildlife photography. Chester has photographed wildlife in North Dakota and the Burke-Ward County area for close to 50 years. A number of his photos have been award-winning photos, and he has successfully self published a book of his photos. In 2006 and 2008 he successfully photographed Whooping Cranes as they migrated through the area. The photos were carried by a number of ND Newspapers.

Galapagos Journey |
Come along on a far away journey to see the wildlife of the Galapagos Islands. Some of the birds found there can be spotted in North Dakota too, while other creatures are unique to the Galapagos Islands. |

Refuge staff will lead you in several bird filled activities that will have you using your legs, brains, and artistic talents. Try your hand at the Daring Duck Duel, Stamp Camp, Bird Jeopardy and What Do I Eat With This Beak? Activities led by Connie Mueller and the Fish & Wildlife Service Team. |
